During the last 20 years, the industry has mounted an incredible promotional campaign–enlisting scientists, advertising agencies, the media and the medical profession in a blitz that turned the statins into one of the bestselling pharmaceuticals of all time. Sixteen million Americans now take Lipitor, the most popular statin, and drug company officials claim that 36 million Americans are candidates for statin drug therapy. What bedevils the industry is growing reports of side effects that manifest many months after the commencement of therapy; the November 2003 issue of Smart Money magazine reports on a 1999 study at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London (apparently unpublished), which found that 36 percent of patients on Lipitor’s highest dose reported side effects; even at the lowest dose, 10 percent reported side effects. 3
Therapy for hypothyroidism is monitored at approximately six week intervals until stable. During these visits, a blood sample is checked for TSH to determine if the appropriate amount of thyroid replacement is being given. The goal is to maintain the TSH within normal limits. Depending on the lab used, the absolute values may vary, but in general, a normal TSH range is between to /ml. Once stable, the TSH can be checked yearly. Over-treating hypothyroidism with excessive thyroid medication is potentially harmful and can cause problems with heart palpitations and blood pressure control and can also contribute to osteoporosis . Every effort should be made to keep the TSH within the normal range.
This Penile Rehabilitation Program can take up to a year, with therapy being initiated prior to your surgery. In order to better understand your pre-operative erectile function, we will be using objective and subjective measurements. Objective measurements will include an ultrasound of the penis, which is a test to assess anatomy (length, curvature), blood flow and record baseline function. Subjectively, you and your female partner (if applicable) will be asked to complete several questionnaires assessing sexual function. Understanding, and possibly treating, your female partner’s current sexual function can have a significant impact on your recovery of erectile function. A few blood tests, including testosterone levels, will also be taken. After surgery, these same tests and procedures will be performed in order to assess your progress and overall erectile function.
